THE TIGHTROPE WALKER

Part of my 20 poem series entitles THE CIRCUS, showing today's world in the role of a circus in a series of circus poems. Can you guess who or what this poem depicts in real life?

Look at me! Look at me! Here in the air!

Up on the tightrope - that's me - up there!

Balancing shakily, certain to fall

I wish that I wasn't up here at all.

Perched so precarious, dangling yet,

Nothing below me, no - no safety net,

One side is darkness, the other is light

I'm walking the wire, and nothing feels right.

My balance is failing, I know that I'll lose,

I must decide on a side - I must choose,

One side is death and the other is life

I've made no decision - I'm walking the knife.

What an act! I'm a star! People watching me shake,

As I head for the end with each step that I take,

Shall I die? Shall I live? And does anyone care?

The tightrope goes on and I hang in the air.
