Every time I try to
shoot an animal
Something stops me
and I cannot fire
Feelings of remorse
begin to simmer
Although I know
that I must feed my family
I can’t look a
roast meal in the eye
I always seem to
throw the gun away.
Sometimes hunters
travel very far away
Searching for some
very special animal
Stalking them on
foot then eye to eye
In their heart a
burning, like a fire
Forces them to
leave their home and family
Search for trophies
so the flame may simmer.
“Turn the heat down
as it starts to simmer
Do not leave it
there to boil away
Casserole will feed
a hungry family
You can use most
any kind of animal
Throw it in the pot
then on the fire
Careful lest a
spark flies in your eye.”
Often tears come
welling in my eye
Reading recipes
appetite starts to simmer
Put my lentil soup
upon the fire
Hunger never seems
to stay away
Vegans think of me
as such an animal
Cos I don’t rate
eggs in the chicken family.
Though I try and
cater for my family
The kids and I are
never eye to eye
How could kids of
mine dare eat an animal?
Temper tantrums
always on the simmer
Fairly soon I guess
they’ll move away
I know that look –
a big mac burger fire!
They love roast
chicken since the chookhouse fire
They saw our parrot
in the same family
He disappeared one
day I was away
A look of
satisfaction in their eye
Culinary lust
begins to simmer
Why should I be
treated like an animal.
Adding birds eye
chilies raises fire
Takes the tofu
taste away for family
Animal glances –
cannibalism simmering?
