THE LEPER'S PRAYER

I tried to put myself into the head of a leper, or someone who was doomed to a miserable, painful end.

Blessed light from Heaven’s gate

Shine upon this wretch,

Angel choir and Seraphim,

Come, my spirit fetch.

Rid me of this rotting flesh

Grind these bones impure,

Seat me on my Lord’s right hand,

Whole for ever more.

Burn from me all memory

Cauterize my breath,

Sing, all angels venerate,

Laud me at my death.

Free me from this bleeding tomb

Earthly low creation,

Lay me in my Savior’s womb

There receive salvation.

Lord, my God, smile down on me

Let your beam ignite

Burn these tears upon my cheeks,

Bathe me in your light.

Raise my poor, unworthy soul,

Heal me, set me high,

See my plight and hear my prayer

Save me, let me die.
