THE KING AND I

The King decreed  a pardon for the peasants in the cells,

for he was full of joy and meant to share it;

a message to the churches "ring aloud the Kingdom's bells

and on this day be happy - I declare it!

An extra holiday was called, a special banquet planned,

with every luxury, no heed of value,

the invitations sent to every person in the land:

"Attend the feast, there's something I must tell you."

The night was fair, and everyone who mattered did attend,

the meal laid on was nothing short of magic;

but people ate and frowned, foreseeing this would be the end,

for years the King had slowly died - 'twas tragic!

A pixie called for silence, and the King stood up to speak,

"You may have heard some rumors that I'm sick;

it's true that I've been breathless and my knees a little weak,

but truth is: I'm as solid as a brick!

"I'm sorry if I scared you," said the King" or caused you grief.

but verily, I shall not die at all;"

the crowd all sighed, and clapped and cheered, unanimous relief,

the King smiled at his subjects in the hall.

"I came across a doctor who is learned in these things,

his lengthy tests were something to be seen;

he diagnosed a sadness that is prevalent in Kings,

the problem was - I did not have a Queen!

"I searched the lakes and mountains, every forest in the land,

the deepest valleys echoed with my cry;

I never found a girl who could believe and take my hand,

and climb forever's ladder to the sky.

"But then one day it happened, and the world stopped turning round,

she made me feel a God above all men;

I flew to air, then when my feet returned to solid ground,

I knew I'd never be alone again.

"Be happy for your King, you know I love you all so much,

and I will live forever, now I'm whole;

I give to you: your Queen, to rule like me, with tender touch,

this Lady holds the secrets of my soul."

As nobles cheered and danced around, the Queen came into sight,

the King embraced her, led her on the floor;

A Kingdom came alive as all rejoiced, that magic night,

The King and Queen? They danced forever more.
