JACK BE NIMBLE

a stonnet (a sonnet that tells a well-known story)

Back to Main Stonnets Index

Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
Jack jump over
The candlestick.

I heard the sirens scream, and that meant trouble,

the spotlights hit the walls and turned them white,

a dozen guards came running on the double,

a prison break was going down tonight.

I watched it from my cell and saw the racer -

a guy with ladder running for the wall,

a guard turned up complete with high-tech laser,

"The Candlestick" would shoot a fiery ball.

The con raced up the ladder to the wire,

he turned to face the screw and raised his fist,

then jumped right at the time he saw him fire,

the candlestick passed underneath and missed.

He made it out, they never got him back,

and we all drank a toast to "nimble" Jack.
