THE HIGH DIVER

Part of my 20 poem series entitles THE CIRCUS, showing today's world in the role of a circus in a series of circus poems. Can you guess who or what this poem depicts in real life?
I'm looking down over them all
I'm feeling a hundred feet tall
I felt a lot sadder
As I climbed the ladder
I'll be happier after the fall.

The crowd below eager and hushed
But I'm in no mood to be rushed
If I take all day
Well what can they say
They can't do a thing when I'm crushed.

I'll finally have all the fame
The papers will carry my name
Onlookers will shake
As they hear my bones break
And they'll all murmur "Oh what a shame."

At church they will pray for my soul
As they bury what's left in a hole
Still not understanding
What I was demanding
How come I'm the one pays the toll?

I know I'm admitting defeat
But Jesus I know when I'm beat
I'm jumping now guys
You can say your goodbyes
As you help scrape me up from the street.
