 REDDIT ME:

Checkpoint Baghdad - a war poem by Australian poet Graeme King - showing the split-second decisions that can mean life or death. ©kingpoetry2007.

CHECKPOINT: BAGHDAD

My serious look at Iraq in a poem. I don't write many war poems, as I haven't been in one, but I can imagine.

Friend or foe? The daily dance

Quick, decide - no second chance

Thousands pass my nervous gun

Sweat from more than boiling sun

Wonder: Which will be the one?

Here to help, ideals soon fade

Wilting in the futile shade

Dreams of home and apple pie

Look a madman in the eye

Will I be the next to die?

Hear the Christmas news report

Carols, cards, but no support

Do your duty! Dies are cast

Though each breath may be my last

Watch the truck approaching fast.

Public scatter – Take my aim

Murder? Self defense – no blame

Them or us – the choice is clear

Seconds only – death draws near

Screams of “Fire” invade my ear.

No return point, frozen breath

Squeeze the trigger – white hot death

Mayhem – watch the sky explode

Blood runs down the sandy road

Yet another deadly load.

Carnage in a far off land

Daily deaths are nightly planned

Here to help – is that so bad?

Caught in some bizarre Jihad

Help me, coz I’m going mad...
